AMALA is a Catholic artist based in Pennsylvania, where she is currently studying Psychology. She began her musical career with violin lessons at the age of seven, and from there the music within her grew in many directions. Thanks to the influence of many Christian and secular artists, teachers, and collaborators, she put together her debut EP, Fight For Me.

Her goal with the music she puts out is to glorify what is good and beautiful through music, and to lead others into deeper communion and intimacy with Christ. Her strong belief is that music is simply an expression of love between every person and God. Music is for everyone and in everyone; they have only to look inwards.

Fight for me

This song was born out of my journey with the book of Exodus. Though I have read and heard the stories from this Biblical book throughout my entire life, I felt specifically called to read it more deeply and to pray with it this Lent. While walking with Moses, I experienced the love of the Lord so much more intimately than ever before, and I received so many new insights and graces. It was from these that this song emerged—the beauty of Exodus was constantly on my mind and heart and I knew that I was being called to artistically express something. And so one day I sat down and just wrote this song, using both verses from the book of Exodus, and also reflections and scribblings from my journal.

Deeper Still

This song was written based off of reflections on Saint Peter. In the gospel of Matthew, Peter sees Jesus walking on the water, and asks him to invite him onto the water. He begins to walk on the water, led by Jesus, but then becomes aware of the wind and waves, and his own inability to stand. He begins to sink, but the Lord’s hand is there to save him. This song reflects the Saint Peter that is within myself: a little foolish, yet with a desire to be near to the Lord. I often ask the Lord to lead me out over the depths, but when I’m there, I sometimes forget that he was the one who led me there, and I rely on my own abilities, or lack thereof. I am not strong enough to stay above the waves—only he can keep me there. He is always close at hand to keep me from drowning in the sea.

Revenir

This song actually began as a simple attempt to write a song in a foreign language. I took French in high school, and am by no means an expert, but I love the language, especially in song. So I initially just started throwing some words that I knew and working with google translate, but as I progressed with the lyrics, it became something beautiful, in all its simplicity. The words hint at my own faith, which is sometimes weak, sometimes strong, but through it all, the Lord is constant and eventually brings me back every time I wander.

Let Us Be Love

I wrote all of the words for this song in eucharistic adoration. The melody also I was hearing in my head as I sat in the church, but I only developed it later. I was with a lot of young Catholics at the time, young people who were brought up in the faith, and who, in spite of their varying struggles, still were so truly and completely chosen by the Lord to be his church. I was reflecting on this during adoration, on all their struggles as cradle Catholics, and all their wounds, and how the Lord still calls them each his own, and the lyrics of this song gently emerged.

Still I Praise

Perhaps the most intense song on this EP, Still I Praise was written in a time of deep spiritual dryness. I could not feel the presence of the Lord, and I longed to feel him and to hear his voice. In that time of dryness, I still knew he was there, and that he was good, even though my own heart and senses had betrayed him, and I told myself to keep praising him. This song came from that call to praise his goodness in spite of what I could or couldn’t feel--the instinct of praise.
